This is an interesting video on JADAM and feeding your garden with seawater:
I have to admit, the JADAM style of farming is quite “out there,” but it is always thought provoking. With the high dilution rates it is hard to see how this would work, but they are getting good results.
Personally, I would be tempted to dilute seawater more like one would dilute urine to use as a fertilizer, perhaps 6-10 parts fresh water to one part seawater, then water with it every few weeks.
This video also made me wonder if seawater might be a good anti-fungal agent in the garden. Some experimentation is definitely in order.

This is very interesting to consider. I have ocean/brakish water in my back yard and have toyed with the idea of experimenting with it on my vegetable garden. I may have to see how it does on a few plants.
Yeah, it’s worth a shot.

Sea water has a sodium content of about 3.5%, whereas sea “salt” that they talk about typically has a sodium content between 30 and 40%. So you’d need to use 10 times their amounts if you use sea water instead of sea salt.
If I understood the calculation in the video, they are applying sea salt at 1% of total harvest weight per year to replenish their field eg. for 3000kg harvest of peppers, they use 30 kg of sea salt. Which is only 0.3-0.4% sodium concentration.
Then they go on to say 500g sea salt to 20L of water every 1~2 weeks for crops. That’s 2.5% sea salt or 0.75-1% sodium with the rest being other minerals. Peppers contain about 0.8% sodium content which matches their application concentration.
That would be 1 part sea water to 4 parts fresh water.
This makes more sense – thank you. I’m going to try it on one of my vegetable beds.
Yesterday I mixed up a batch of sea salt and set up a trial to compare it to fresh water and worm juice using tomato seedlings. I’m applying the sea salt and worm juice once a week. I have to say after applying the sea salt the tomato seedling didn’t look as happy as the other two today. Will let you know if there’s any benefit.
I harvested some seaweed a few weeks ago and poured the rinse water on a paw paw… I think it enjoyed it.
