Over at This Dad Does, there’s a very nice review of my latest book Grow or Die: The Good Guide to Survival Gardening:
If you’re going to survive the upcoming apocalypse, you’re going to need food.
Lots of food.
And if you need a lot of food, you have to know how to grow it. Once you’ve mastered this, you can sit back, safe in the knowledge that you can survive decades of international turmoil and societal breakdown.
Grow or Die: The Good Guide to Survival Gardening by David the Good will give you all the knowledge and metaphorical tools to survive even the most serious economic meltdown.
David the Good is a well known published author, blogger and survival gardening expert.
His blog The Survival Gardener is one of the most popular on self sufficiency and small holding while his YouTube channel has nearly 2000 subscribers.
The author is one of these guys who’s knowledge on his subject should be measured in libraries. But you can buy Grow or Die on Kindle for a few quid – a good investment given the uncertain times we live in.
By the time you’ve finished you’ll have the tools to:
- Grow high calorie foods which store easily
- Preserve your crops through the winter
- Make your own fertiliser and compost
- Improve irrigation and control pests
There’s also a useful ‘post-Event’ Emergency Quick Start Guide for when you pick up David’s book a little too late in the post-apocalyptic future.
The book is a lot of fun and is a mix of fantasy and practical gardening advice. Even if you’re not a Doomsday Prepper, you’ll find a lot of useful knowledge to get started on your survival garden.
I don’t want to go into details about all of the techniques and tips in this book so here are my highlights.
There’s quite a bit more on the site – go click here to read it.
And you can get Grow or Die here.

Hey man was wondering when this book is coming out in paperback? I’d love to purchase it! I don’t do the kindle thing…and if I did it wouldn’t much help if TWAWKI came crashing down. Please I wanna read this let me know! I could only find it for kindle on Amazon.
Thanks for the question – I’ve been asked this by quite a few folks thus far, so you’re not alone. My publisher should release the paperback version by early spring – they did the same thing with “Compost Everything.” I’ll make an announcement when it comes out.
David, thanks for linking to this. The book was really great. You’ve inspired me to start digging up my horrible (inherited) gravel covered shrub beds to plan with something more useful (edible). I’ll need to check out your other book too now.
I had hoped to include a video with my review of when I was living off insects in the African bush. When you fry them, they taste a bit like bacon bits. If I manage to find it, I’ll add it to the post.
Hey – any info on entomophagy is definitely welcome around here. Thanks for the nice review.
Yea, I want the paperback version also. I prefer to put it on the shelf and let the little microscopic bugs eat it…. I mean, know I don’t have to turn it on!! Lol!!
Hi, this the third of your books I’ve bought. I’ve been very impressed and appreciate all the info on different types of gardening styles. I am an experienced flower grower…not so much with the vegetables but “this is the year!” Apparently I’ve done a lot of permaculture type things naturally without knowing they were a thing, so it’s nice to find my people. I bought the Easy Fl book, Grocery Row, and now Grow or Die. My question is should I buy Fl Survival next or Food Forest? I’m in NE FL on a one acre lot out in the -used to be- country. Thanks, David. I look forward to continually to read your witty, knowledgeable, and applicable approach to Fl gardening.
Thank you, April. Create Your Own Florida Food Forest (the big 2nd edition) is focused on creating a food forest, with lots of species ideas and inspiration. Florida Survival Gardening is more focused on maximum food production.
