Yesterday I was considering The YouTube Question.
I don’t want to give up the channel; however, the time involved hasn’t justified the returns.
Yet saying goodbye to 28,000+ people? That’s just sad.
So I was thinking: I receive gardening questions almost every day and sometimes multiple times in one day. What if I sat and answered gardening questions instead of doing the more complicated videos I currently create?
It would be funny, to the point, and take me a lot less time on production.
Plus it would engage with my audience. Heck, I could produce daily videos if I approached it that way, thereby building the channel, helping people out, and cutting down the time involved.
What do you think?
BTW, as I type this I’m borrowing the internet connection on my phone. The internet is down yet again at my house. On Monday a representative of the ISP said they’d call me back that afternoon about fixing our problems. Yeah, about that…

Genius idea.
Yes! Great idea. Your regular videos are fun, but answering real life gardening questions would actually be of more practical use to your viewers, imho- :)
Can’t hurt to try? I’d certainly watch if you answered a question that seemed relevant to my garden.
I would ask questions if I knew it was part of your routine. I hesitate asking to many questions now ,because I know how busy you are. It just amazes me you have any time at all with all that is going on. Right now the wife are going through the experience of ” baby boot camp”. Our first child is taking our full attention…and the gardens … well they have seen better days… we are rookies… and you guys are pros… but even so… I admire your gumption.
“Good” idea! I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years. I finally subscribed lately to encourage you because I couldn’t believe that you were able to upload so regularly from your place in the tropics. How come he gets good internet off in the jungle and I can’t right in a major tourist destination in tropical Mexico? Anyway, I feel your pain.
Your information has been invaluable to me. I’m just getting the hang of gardening year round and watching your energy as you plant all kinds of stuff has spurred me on. Bananas and sweet potatoes everywhere! Local squash plant shading my chickens.
I will be asking you things! Your experience and knowledge are very much appreciated.
Great idea, I know I’d watch them. I rather expect most questions to be Florida- and Tropics-based, but some answers will be applicable across multiple zones. And although I’m not really much of a gardener now, I’m trying to stock up on knowledge for eventual retirement.
I still think that it would be a good idea to do a bigger video every week or two, but these smaller videos would be great for the majority of your content.
As long as you include some of your singing, it’ll be a big win. After a few bourbons, watching a few of your videos that end with one of your grammy award wining Justin Bieber duets, my day is complete. :)
Yay! It also means you could address gardener’s issues from temperate climes as well. It’s great watching you in your tropical garden, but not that applicable to my northern California yard.
I would really miss your vlogs, maybe two q&a, and two vlogs per week?
That idea sounds like niche worth exploring. You could also use some of that time to direct viewers to your older relevant videos.
I will only watch if you dress up like a swami or spaceghost.
This idea pleases me because seeing you pleases me.
Do it!
I know this guy on the internet called “David the Good.” I wish there was a way we could ask him gardening questions and he would respond with answers on YouTube. If he did that, I think a million people would buy his books.
I liked it when you answered my question. It is too cold now to implement the suggestion but come spring…
Sounds like a good idea! You have a unique and entertaining way of sharing your gardening knowledge. I’d hate for you to go away!
I wonder about the big picture though ie; how many people came to this website after learning about it via your YouTube channel (I know at least one); and how many books have you sold as a result of the channel as well. Again, I know I’ve bought a couple at least. Actually, I bought a “Compost Your Enemies” shirt and I think an Mp3. I guess I’m a big fan. lol. I like this site but I really don’t come here as often as I should. I practically live on YT and look forward to your new videos, even if they’re not daily.
So, just some thoughts I had.

PS If not for you, I would not be aware of the grave danger that is the Bahfeemus. So thank you.
I would watch or listen to your Q & A videos :) Key words in the video title would be helpful to me. :-)
How about a mix of videos and Q&A. Maybe the standard 2 Videos per week and the rest Q&A. I love all your stuff and bought all your books and some videos, but I wonder how much the audience would grow without the draw of the videos that suck people in to the joy that is knowing “David the Good”. I value your advice more than other gardeners because it is more in line with how I want to approach gardening…no input from outside.
Thank you, Jason. Yeah, I would like to still do tours and gardening. We’re about to move locations so we’ll see what happens. The new place only has space for balcony gardening – in the shade – so that may make for a whole new set of interesting gardening problems and solutions.
I haven’t liked q&a from other channels, because they’re essentially skyping and it looks like crap. Too much chatty dialogue for me. I WANT ANSWERS!! I know you’ll do a great job tho, and I will watch. And have questions.
Yeah, I understand that. I generally don’t like too much talk, unless the host is really funny.
Which you are! I’m interested to see if you decide to try q&a how you do it because it’s guaranteed to be different and – no pressure – really well thought-out. I say give it a whirl. No one will lose their (insert human compostable here) if you decide to stop doing it…lol
