Every year I post my goals for the next year.

Let’s see how I did on the goals I set for 2018, then we’ll hit 2019.

2018 Goal 1: Publish 2 Gardening Books

I ended up finishing five books this year which were unrelated to gardening. Consequently, I only managed to write one gardening title. I had to take the work I was hired to do, so no loss there.

2018 Goal 2: Secure Land for Gardening

I managed to do this by borrowing the 1/4 acre lot we use for our current garden.

I managed to do even better by finding and buying some land of my own.

Success!

2018 Goal 3: Create a Balcony/Porch Garden

I gave up on this.

2018 Goal 4: Hit 60k subscribers on YouTube

Nope. I hit almost 53k. 7k short.

2018 Goal 5: Stick to a Workout Regimen

I did well early in the year until I hurt my shoulder and had to give up. I’m 165lbs at 6’1″, so I am lean, but I want to be in better shape with more muscle mass. I’ll have to work around the persistent injury. Having my own land should help put me in better shape, even if I’m not good at sticking to regular lifting.

I made 1 out of 5! I win!

I was close on a few things, but not on others. It was a weird year. I literally wrote 50k per month for about four months of the year, all on other people’s projects. That took it out of me.

Let’s move on to this year.

Goals for 2019:

Now let’s make some goals for 2019!

1. Finish writing Garden Heat: A Jack Broccoli Novel

Because the first book sold SO WELL, I need to write a follow-up for the literally dozens of raving fans I won with the first installment. This is obviously my top priority in the new year.

2. Turn Compost Everything into a composting course with lots of video and written content.

I have a friend working on this now. I think there is a lot of potential here, as many people really enjoy seeing a demonstration rather than just reading about something.

3. Turn Totally Crazy Easy Florida Gardening into a course

Totally Crazy Easy Florida Gardening is my best selling book. People in Florida really need a crash-course in gardening – why not provide it? I have a husband/wife team interested in taking on this project early in the new year.

4. Hit 20k subscribers on The Survival Gardening newsletter

That’s about 8k more than I have now. It should be doable.

5. Finish The Good Guide to Plant Propagation

This book is half written and needs to be all the way written. I could finish it in a month if I can get some free time. It would tie in nicely with my new nursery book as well.

6. Turn Start Your Own Home-Based Plant Nursery into an audiobook

This would just take a few days of voicing and editing. Some people really prefer audio, and audio versions of my other books have done well.

7. Turn Turned Earth into an audiobook

Yep. This needs to happen. Last year I contracted with a fellow that has a great voice, but he’s had some health problems lately so I may just voice the book myself.

8. Build a house

This is going to be huge. I don’t know how I’ll pull if off, but I need to do it. One piece at a time!

9. Start another plant nursery

Once the house is built, I would really like to set up another nursery. I did well with my last one and there’s a real need for innovation here.

10: Hit 100k subscribers on YouTube

This should be quite possible if I chronicle the story of the new land and house construction. Rachel wants to make regular videos from now on, so hey – we could do it!

11: Finish a Top Secret Film with Marjory Wildcraft

I have some serious experts lined up as guests for a major instructional film project I hope to finish early this year. I’ll let you know when it’s out and I can share more.

I think that will keep me busy.
