Jay shares a comment on how my video on starting a food forest the easy way changed his life:
Hi David. I don’t think I’ve ever commented on a YouTube video before, but I just wanted to let you know how much this video has changed my life. I first watched it last year and your words really spoke to me at that time, particularly the last five minutes where you talk about analysis paralysis and your friend who was too nervous to make any mistakes. I felt like you were talking about me it described me so well. Your words were liberating and soon after, I stopped worrying about having a “perfect” plan, etc., and just started planting whatever I could get my hands on. This video resurfaced on my feed today and I gave it a rewatch. It wasn’t until I finished watching again that I realized how much progress I’ve made over this past year. Just like you said, I’ve killed a lot of plants along the way, but with sheer volume of plants I’ve actually managed to develop a small food forest that I’m proud of. It’s still in its early stages and I’ve got so many more dreams/plans, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far and I owe a lot of that to you. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but I just wanted to say thank you.
Sometimes it just takes a good push to break through a mental block. I had a similar block when it came to grafting and it was broken through by going to a grafting demonstration put on my Oliver Moore at the Florida Earthskills Gathering years ago. I just needed someone to say “you can do it,” and give me the tools to try for myself.
Planting food forests is done all the time by illiterate gardeners in the tropics. It doesn’t have to be over-thought, over-planned, and make you feel over-wrought!
I just posted the sixth installment of my course “Create a Food Forest the Easy Way” over at Skool. In this in-depth series of videos, we demonstrate just how easy it is to plant and maintain a food forest over time. We visit a 13-year-old food forest I planted, and I share how to start a food forest for almost free.
The series can be watched in its entirety when you sign up. It’s well-worth the tiny investment!
Whatever you do, don’t sit around and do nothing. You can plant a food forest, and you don’t have to be a landscape architect or permaculture guru to do it.
Here’s the video that Jay commented on – I think you’ll enjoy it:
