When we moved, we packed up our collection of books into about 30-40 boxes.
Over the course of 2022, I was reading through The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire… and then, somehow, the last three unread volumes got packed deeply. For the last few months I couldn’t find them.
Until a few minutes ago, when I opened the fifth-to-last box at the bottom of a stuffed closet of boxed books.
Now I can get back to it. That is, once I finish reading the five or so books I’m currently working through.
I’ll feel really moved in once we finally have some epic bookshelves we can put all these books on. Another set of books we were looking for was our two volumes on cheesemaking, and we found those as well. Going through books took up a chunk of this afternoon, but the process was mitigated by the presence of my wife, our two vodka tonics, and an upbeat jazz playlist on YouTube.
As a side quest, I also organized a large kitchen cabinet.
All that to say, I’m so pleased with this afternoon’s hunt, I decided to commemorate this historic occasion in a post.

Nothing worse that being in the middle of a series and not being able to find the last books. Especially after moving because then you start wondering if they got sent to the thrift store/ dump at the very end of packing.
Yes! I actually found an entire box of spices stacked in there with the books at the bottom of a closet. Moving definitely turns life upside-down. This series was a gift from my wife, too, so I really would have missed it.
Hah! I totally know how that feels. Most of our books are still packed in 70+ boxes and we can’t even unpack them because we have no bookshelves and expect to move within a year anyway. I had packed all the books I was currently reading in specially marked boxes, but then I started finishing them and had to dig around looking for the ones I wanted to read next…I guess I’ve been spoiled, because I’d never truly appreciated how glorious a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall shelf full of books is, until I had to dig through haphazardly labeled boxes.
