I ate a wrap from a local bakery yesterday for lunch… then by evening I was feeling a little weird… and at about 9PM the symptoms started in earnest. You know that feeling where there’s a painful, tight ball in your stomach and you don’t feel like you can stand up straight? That was me last night. This morning I’m weak and shaky but the pain is a lot less. I’m sure it was lunch, because I shared some of it with my 4-year-old daughter and she woke up in the night crying that her stomach hurt. Poor kid – she came and sat with me this morning and we consoled each other for a while.
The worst food poisoning I ever had was from a burger at a Superbowl party. Rachel and I were dating at that point and I was driving a 1964 Ford F-100 with oversize tires and mis-matched paint on the doors. I was so ill, I couldn’t stand up at all, let alone drive. The truck had no power steering and was a monster to drive – but my little, 108lb girlfriend bravely drove me home in it and worried over me until I sent her away to let me die in peace. Of course I married her. She’d already proven the “in sickness and in health thing” multiple times over.
But what a lousy reason to miss the Superbowl!
In good news, we finally got some rain last night, though I don’t think I’ll be doing any gardening today.

Oh no! So sorry you got sick. I am getting over a 102 flu bug myself… well.. it was two weeks ago… but I have the residual cough that will be with me for weeks.
Thanks for the nice story about your wife to be seeing you through your previous food bug. Maybe then you realized she was a keeper.
Take it easy… get better… lots of fluids…stuff you probaly already know to do.

My worst case of food poisoning (I can really only recall a couple other very mild ones, I think) was when I was a newby 2Lt navigator in the USAF. We were flying a local training mission (KC-135 tanker) and were doing the approach/landing practice at the end (several hours in). It was warm and bumpy, making this all the worse.
I started feeling queasy and at first figured it was just airsickness. But I wasn’t prone to that, and never was after this, so subsequently figured it was food poisoning.
Anyway, at first I just tried to gut it out, as I was young and reticent to show weakness, etc. I quickly started feeling worse though and all of a sudden I was puking. I was sent out of the cockpit and went back to the cargo compartment where I hung onto the garbage bin and emptied my stomach. I then held on for dear life and thought I might die.
In retrospect I couldn’t believe they continued the flight for some time and didn’t land. The vice wing commander, full colonel, was on board and commanding the flight, and I guess he was a real hard ass.
When I finally got home I stripped out of my foul flight suit and fell into bed, sleeping for a good 18 hours or so. It took some time to feel normal again. Damn that bad inflight lunch! (chicken sandwich, I think)
Geez… that’s horrid. I had an airsickness event in a tiny prop plane banging around in the wind that almost did the same thing. I can’t imagine the combination.
Yeah, it may have been the single most horrible day of my life. I really don’t think I’ve ever felt so bad. My wife was horrified when I came home, reeking of puke and looking like death!
Just to clarify, I don’t really think it was actually airsickness at all. I never had that problem in all my time as a navigator or pilot. The only time I ever really felt queasy in my whole career was my very first flight in navigator school in a T-37 (small trainer jet) flying a low level mission over the Sierra Nevada. But my inner ear and brain adjusted after that.
