Karl sent me some fascinating pictures of a vintage hoe his grandfather made from a shovel.
He writes:
“This hoe alternative was modified by my grandpa. they used it to dig corrugates were the tractor turned around. It was for gravity irrigation on their farm in Idaho. It is a modified shovel. When he put in a pivot I asked for one of his diggers. It is most likely older than I am. I thought you may find it interesting.”
I love this sort of ingenuity. I’ll bet you couldn’t do this with a modern shovel as no one makes good steel heads like that anymore. Vintage tools are the best.

I have several spare Shovel heads hanging around. Gonna try and make one. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
I would love to see it!
Reminds me of a hoedad we used for tree planting back in the 80’s – any idea how he bent it with such a smooth curved transition? One way would be to fill the handle with sand, plug the ends, heat red hot and bend. His bend is perfect.
