We were given a box of pears today by a local gardener. Perfect timing, considering today is the Feast Day of St. Augustine on the liturgical calendar! (If you know, you know.)
I love these Southern pears.
There are actually quite a few good ones you can grow in the South, including Shinko, Shinseiki, Pineapple, Keiffer, Spalding, Hood, Baldwin, Le Conte… they just have to be disease resistant and able to take lower chill hours. We are in Zone 8b here. So far, we’ve planted about 8 pears on our property and we’re going to put more in. Only the Spalding is producing so far, but some of the others are getting big. Can’t wait to have too many!
Time for pear salsa!
