Yesterday we posted a vert short video showing you how to tell when a watermelon is ready to pick:
We’ve picked our fair share of underripe and overripe melons in the past.
No more!
Now we consistently pick watermelons at the right time with these easy methods.
To discover if a watermelon is ripe:
1. Check the tendril closest to the watermelon. If it’s all dried up, that is a very good indicator of ripeness.
2. Thump it. Some say they can tell by the sound if a melon is ready, but we can’t. But we do it anyway, then skip to number three.
3. Many watermelons have a pale spot on the bottom that turns at least a watery yellow shade when ripe.
4. Finally – how long has it been since you planted your melon? If you know the variety and look at the seed packet, you know that you should be in the right range to harvest. If it’s earlier than expected, your melon might not be ready.
However, if it has the dry tendril and the yellow spot, and you thumped it so you look smart, you ought to have a ripe melon. Sometimes melons ripen early due to stress or damage.
Hope that helps you discover when a watermelon is ready to pick.

Yeah, I’ve never figured out what sound a ripe melon makes.
I’ll keep the other tips in mind, though. Thanks!
For sure. “Thump”
