I decided to try something different on YouTube this week. Since my previous video on how to germinate a peach pit has been popular, I thought “hey, wouldn’t it be fun to animate the process with stop-motion?”
And so I did:
It’s really kind of a mess but this video will help me work some kinks out. I need to work on lighting, background and focus. The camera’s autofocus was not reliable and neither was the exposure, as you can see from frame to frame. I adjusted as best as I could in Final Cut after the fact but it’s not as good as getting sharp, well-lit shots at the beginning.
My YouTube viewers liked it, though, with the exception of one guy who wasn’t happy I didn’t animate all the way through to planting orchards and harvesting fruit:
It’s always the potheads or the vegans…
If you are interested in seeing the results of growing peaches from seed, I’ve shared my successes both here and on YouTube:
I’d like to create more “Animated Gardener” videos. It’s fun to do and so long as I keep the videos short it doesn’t eat up too much time.
What do you think?

“it’s always the potheads or the vegans” Yep. Them and the ‘your-opinion-is-different-to-my-opinion-so-I’m-going-to-have-a-meltdown’ snowflakes.
Awesome. Not what I expected- thought it would be a timelapse of actual seed sprouting, shots in fridge, etc. But good visuals, clear explanations, and Bahfeemus as host and director- that was the best part! So yes, please, make some more!
Peaches are dead easy. I didn’t even bother with the refrigerator step. Just tossed the pits out on the garden. A year later I saw a few sprouts. It was three years to first flowers and four to first fruit, but they were set back some by rabbits biting off the tops the first winter. This is northern Illinois, so seriously cold winters, the rabbits get hungry!
Two trees appear to be nectarines, and produce lots of fruit, which always rots on the trees in late summer. Real bummer and not sure why. The regular peaches do great.
Do you have to start them right away? Will older peach pits (a year or two old) still germinate? Also, have you tested taking the seed out of the pit versus leaving it in?
They might grow when older – I sprouted some that were a half-year old. I have taken the kernels out and left them in. Got decent germination both ways.
