Like many things promised by the government and big corporations (but I repeat myself), biosolids can become a serious problem.
You might remember that I warned about biosolids four years ago:
Most everything in our modern society is inverted and perverted and broken.
Try to feed your garden with what you produce on your own land. From manure to hay to bagged compost, contaminants are showing up everywhere. If you’re trusting big corporations or your doctor or government to take care of you – guess what? They won’t. If their product kills your garden (or you), most of them don’t really care.
It’s beyond just “making a buck” at this point.
Yes, they make lots of money. But the rulers of this world also work for Satan, so sometimes the destruction is just for the sake of destruction.

Scary stuff. It’s getting hard to find any external inputs (mulch, compost, fertilizer, etc.) that you can trust to not kill your garden or poison your family.
Even mulch from tree trimming companies is starting to worry me. I recently learned that in some areas the roadsides and areas under power lines are sprayed with plant growth regulators (PGRs). PGRs slow plant growth so the power companies don’t have to trim trees back from power lines as often, and PGRs reduce the number of times the roads departments have to mow the roadsides each year.
There’s conflicting info out there about the toxicity of PGRs and I can’t find any information about how long the residues last, or whether the residues can pass into your soil/plants if you use wood chips from PGR-sprayed plants as mulch.
Unfortunately, we have seen that a lack of evidence doesn’t *necessarily* mean there’s no cause to worry. For years gardeners were assured that there was no problem with Grazon or other persistent herbicide residues in mulch, compost, manure, and potting soil. Eventually so many gardens were destroyed by herbicide-contaminated products that the problem could no longer be denied.
I recently looked at several synthetic fertilizer brands and was shocked to see on the labeling that darn near all of them say “derived from biosolids”. Since I was gonna greatly expand my nursery I was considering the possibility of using synthetic fertilizer on some plants to more easily maintain them. It’s against my moral judgment to use synthetics at all especially on my personal food crops but the ease of maintenance on huge amounts of nursery stock was enticing. After seeing that on the labeling I cannot do it. Someday I’ll answer for my actions to a higher power and I can’t stand the idea of poisoning food bearing plants that others are gonna buy and eat from. Not sure how much of the toxins are cleaned out in manufacturing but I won’t risk it nonetheless. I definitely wouldn’t use milorganite or anything ever but I saw that on brands like rainbow and Graco. They don’t even look anything like traditional biosolids like milorganite. Scary stuff indeed. Knowing many conventional farms use biosolids on produce I’m afraid to buy anything that’s non organic. Fortunately organic certified farms still cannot use that crap. Pun intended…
You are safer using something like MiracleGro, DynaGro or Peters Plant food than almost anything else. At least it is mostly just pure elements! Really sad.
I recall when city made compost was first introduced and people would ask me if I was getting any ‘free’ composte. It took me a fast second to say ‘NOPE’. My why was that I didn’t know IF sprayed grass clippings or medicated animal poop or excessive amounts of weed seeds were going to be in there. I later learned that its a ‘hot’ processing method and that it would kill off the nasty stuff BUT as we know, glyphosate will not readily break down. I imagined tainted compost being mixed so that awful chemical would be spread out over the whole batch… still a huge NOPE from me.
