The Grocery Row Garden system did very well in 2021, so I am putting in a new one so I can demonstrate the method again for those that haven’t gotten the concept yet.
We took two of our rutabaga beds, harvested the rutabagas, then combined them into a single Grocery Row Garden.
I’ll post the video soon – we’re recording the second half of it this evening. We have the trees planted, now we just need to plant some vegetables and put down mulch.
I know it’s strange to be planting long-term perennials and trees on a rental property, but I don’t really have another option at this point. We are looking for our own homestead, but I cannot stop gardening and planting trees just because we may move within a year or two. If I did, I wouldn’t have any content for YouTube or this blog. Or for my book writing. Sometimes people ask, “why are you planting trees there – it’s a rental?” That’s why. I cannot stop, because teaching gardening is my profession. If someone else ends up with the gardens, so be it! I would love to be planting trees on our own land but that hasn’t happened yet. It’s in God’s hands, and He has taken marvelous care of us so far.
We’ve come to love this area and Atmore in particular. I would like to stay, and I look forward to seeing where God plants us.

David, just keep on planting! Because its great and beautiful and exiting and medicine for the soul that loves life and trusts or at least hopes that the future will be good. May God place you and your fam and your chicken and your goats (and maybe this time also all your goods) in the right time in the right place!!! Thank You for doing, what you are doing!
That was a marvelous answer to the “rental” question. You have to keep gardening, no matter if you rent or own it. I have followed your website posts and y tube for years now and it was your passion for gardening that drew me in and the humor that kept me coming back. You are just like everyone else, we are all making the best with what we have, where we are in our journey. Keep on moving forward my friend.
Thank you, Boyd.
Hi David. I watch all your videos and am using your suggestions for gardening success in FL. In the woods by my house I found several strange potato-looking things on the ground , varying sizes from 1.5 inches across to 3.5 inches. I’m not sure what they are. I will likely plant one. The woods are mostly pine, oaks , cabbage palms and saw palmetto, and too many Brazilian peppers. Is there a way I can send you a photo?
They are almost certainly air potatoes, AKA D. bulbifera. My email is david@floridafoodforests.com
Is a new related book out on the new grocery row garden?
Brian,
There is a book about grocery row gardening. It’s definitely worth the read, if you haven’t yet.
