Happy Independence Day to my American readers.
I recently picked up a couple small bags of kola nuts from the local market. I planted a few of them at my land, then this morning I found a few left on my counter at home, just begging to be planted.
I’ll let you know when they come up. I’ve never planted kola nuts before.
In the video’s comment section, Lisa asked what kola nuts taste like, and I responded:
‘Tis true.
Finally, following our 4th of July theme, if these grow and fruit, I’ll have my independence from ever buying caffeine again.

Hello David, how did these turn out? I was wondering if they can survive light frost.
I grew fond of them in Jamaica where they are called bissy. They are not chewed, but instead grated and made into a tea with spices, coconut milk and sugar. When fully dried and grated it can last a couple years, just make sure there is no mold in the beginning and it stays relatively dry (not easy in Florida or Jamaica) Also I have found that the bitterness varies greatly between trees.
They are growing well for me right now. About 8-10″ tall, nice glossy leaves. I’m not sure if they can take frost but I doubt it.
Hi there, excited to find your post, did you just buy a bag of kola nuts like at whole foods? Due to the stay at home I’m limited here in East tampa, Amazon nuts have bad reviews…fill me in on how it’s doing and other crops plants you’ve experiment with in our climate, I’m hoping the kola nut will be my answer to depending on sodas and migraine help.
