Well, this will ruffle some feathers:
Steve Solomon convinced me to give up on the idea of “organic feeding only,” and it has helped us grow some great vegetables. Compost is king, but I am no longer against “chemical fertilizers.” Especially after getting my garden destroyed by a load of “organic” composted cow manure.

Been following for a bit. I finally got my soil tested and the CEC values for the old garden and the new garden were quite lackluster! Old = 5.5, and the new = 2.5. I saw that just a small amount of humus would even help the lower, newer garden area. I saw in previous videos of yours that you had added biochar and clumping kitty litter to your soil to help with the CEC. Did you have any concern with the sodium that was coming alongside said clay? I was also considering worm castings to up the CEC. I know next year will be better as I incorporate more fallen leaves, etc into the soil.
Wow – that is really low. The sodium is bound up, so I didn’t worry about it. I should have done a CEC test side by side with various additions.
Indeed quite low. When I look back at the previous growing season, some of the outcomes sort of make sense in that, it would’ve helped for me to keep on side dressing through the season vs only at the beginning or during transplant (I usually drop a bit of espoma veggietone and bone meal). My sodium levels were higher – I also used bonemeal as my primary phos, so that added some more salt. Not that concerned due to how much rain we get. But, instead of the kitty litter, I went ahead and picked up some Humic DG. We’ll see how it fares this time around.
