A woman on my livestreams keeps suggesting we should build a yurt on our land. I have no interest in yurts, as they come from a cold, arid climate and therefore I simply assumed the building method was unsuited to the humid tropics, but today I did some more research.
As I suspected… mold is an issue:
I have also read they can be fine if you keep the building well-ventilated and in full sun.
Someone else recommended using essential oils [insert snort of laughter here].
I’d rather just stick to wood and concrete instead of canvas.

Yes, concrete works. Blocks and concrete castillos and dalas with rebar in them. Just don’t paint it. Use white stucco inside and out. Paint is pushed off of the concrete by the humidity in the rainy season. Flying termites arrive and make wood parts hollow dust. Yes, I still build some things with wood but usually the pretty parts like doors and cabinets. They are worth fighting for. Or the outbuildings, for my goats and chickens. After three years, I can burn them down and start over. For the house, big aluminum windows with screens and make the roof overhangs really big so you can leave the windows open in the rainy season. The roof can be poured concrete or get those concrete fiber roof panels on top of metal beams if you like the sound of the rain. Use the expensive reflective white roof sealer/waterproofing with the insulating fibers in it.
It sounds hippy dippy, but some essential oils do actually kill mold. Oregano and thyme oil gave best results in a hospital study when atomised into the air. They also killed off superbugs that use quorum sensing to signal other cells to join forces in attacking a host and finding food by blocking the signalling. These “essential oils” are how perennials protect themselves. Inhaling some essential oils like lavender or tea tree oil can also have estrogenic effects and give you man boobs (gynecomastia).
Crazy. I have heard some of them are very good at killing fungi, but it was funny so I couldn’t pass up. Imagining someone daubing little drops here and there.
I will stay away from the lavender!
I hope her feelings aren’t yurt
