Yesterday we posted a new video on making free biochar retorts from cans:
We also posted some outtakes over at Patreon.
It’s a fun method, so it needed a fun video.
Have a great weekend.

The still picture of your family band looks like you have a giant hoop earring. Just the way your head lined up with the black curtain in the background. Kinda works though with the greaser 50s look. At least that’s what I’m reminded of by the outfit. Anyways nothing important to say just thought it looked funny. Doubt you’d pierce your ears especially on the right side only…
I had my ears pierced wen I was 19 and dumb – they never healed up, so I could put earring in if I wanted to look stupid again. But I don’t.
I’m sure some would think ear piercing on a dude is dumb but as far as I’m concerned it’s none of business or
it doesn’t directly effect my life so do as you please. As long as whatever you do doesn’t infringe on another then you should be free do to whatever. That said I’ve never pierced anything on me and wouldn’t either way personally. I do have one tattoo but it’s simply my son’s name. I may get another but it would be only my daughter’s name. Otherwise I doubt I’d ever do anything else just to have a picture on me. Not against tattoos either but it’s just something I’d likely never do. My children’s names are worth a permanent marking though. Already did the one’s so I better do the other to show equal favor to both of them.
Yeah, I do think it’s dumb. I don’t have tats, which I’m glad for. Of course, if I tatooed my kids names I’d be covered in ink.
I used to be in the art scene…
The older I get, the less I like any body modifications. I am sick of modernity.
Ya definitely understand that. You’ve got a bunch of kids and sometimes modern ways of doing things is just ridiculous. Truthfully I like the ease of certain modern amenities but on the same coin hate it. Life’s not supposed to be completely easy. There’s definitely good to be found in doing things the old fashioned way something. Everything is give and take. I hate technology but hear I sit using it. I’m 10 years younger then yourself and can probably do 10 times less on computers too. Only know enough to use it for selling online and communications but doing anything otherwise I’m totally clueless.
I have heard that ash isn’t very beneficial for alkaline soils; is biochar different? The bedrock here in Wisconsin is largely limestone.
Thanks for all your help!
Biochar should be neutral, unless it has ash in it.
I hope this is interesting, it is a short documentary by Eugenio Monesma about traditional charcoal burners in Northern Spain.
Most charcoal burning is done with some sort of enclosure or being turfed over to control the oxygen getting to the coals, here they are just touching the pile off and then dousing and turning the glowing coals to put them out. The charcoal was used for cooking and for heating. Often it was burnt in small braziers that were kept under tables with long tablecloth “skirts” so you could keep warm in the winter while sitting at the tables for dinner or socializing.
The old guys used to do it for a living, the others are doing it to keep the tradition alive. They all seem to be having a blast.
All of these documentaries are machine translated so the sub titles are wonky, but the process is pretty clear.

This is excellent – thank you, David.
David,
I have a proposal for your next experiment.
CODE NAME: (Dinosaur Trap.)
Scope: A food forest microclimate.
I have a 5a homestead in the Florida mountains, (North Walton County) elevation 300 ft.
On Mt property is a large clay pit. 150ft by 200ft by 20 ft deep.
I propose a food forest microclimate, small pond at the south side pit wall at the bottom with terraced food trees and brushes in full sun upt the north side.
I am requesting assistance on selecting and placing of plants to take advantage of the unique sites topography.
Offering you the rights to document the process and results for your next book.
That is a very interesting place to put a food forest. Thank you, but I don’t think I can add any more projects.
Super cool ! When did you say you were having the plant sale again I forgot to write it on the calendar
March 2nd, at the Plaza Ferdinand in Pensacola. 9AM to 1PM.
Thanks for this video. I think we’re going to give this method a try.
