This 3-4 year old seedling is fruiting for the first time.
I really thought this was a peach tree, but the lack of fuzz on these fruit tells me it’s a nectarine!
A few years ago, I bought the kids a bunch of different stone fruit to eat, with the caveat that they “must save the seeds!”
We got plums, pluots, peaches… and apparently nectarines, though I don’t remember now.
Multiple seedlings are growing in our Grocery Row Gardens and food forest right now. It’s fun to plant tree seeds and see what you get.
On Saturday we planted a bunch of new apple trees from Century Farm Orchards. I also planted three apple seedlings we started around the same time as our nectarine. They’re probably from Fuji, Gala or Honeycrisp, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be anything like their parents. The seedlings are about 4′ tall with good-looking trunks. I’m excited to see if they’ll grow big and fruit in our Lower Alabama yard. The South used to be filled with seedling apple orchards. Back then, many apples were grown for cider, not for fresh eating, so having sour apples was just fine.
I wouldn’t mind some cider myself!
