If you couldn’t buy garden amendments, would you still be able to grow lots of food?
The local price of a 50lb bag of 13-13-13 fertilizer has gone up around $6-7 since February. War, oil prices and shipping all play a big role in fertilizer prices.
For years we’ve tested alternatives. If fertilizer disappeared, we’d be fine. We don’t buy “triple 13” because there’s no need. Potential plant food is everywhere.
Eight years ago we filmed an in-depth and entertaining video titled 7 Ways to Feed Your Garden for Free.
It’s had 663,000 views so far, so it’s definitely struck a chord.
In it I share how we fed our gardens with everything from ashes to compost, seaweed to biochar – and more.
Chemical fertilizer prices may be a big problem for large commercial farms, but they don’t have to be a problem in your backyard.
Nature was designed to cycle nutrients. Fertilizer prices don’t have to impact your garden.
I was just thinking about that today and thought I would send some encouragement your way. Gather and craft your own amendments and you’ll be able to keep growing.
Stay calm and garden on.
And Compost Everything, of course.
