4 Simple Ways to Get Rid of St. Augustine Grass

Last week I received this email asking me how to get rid of St. Augustine grass:
Hello David,
ย
I’m sure you get a million emails, and will keep this as short as possible.ย  I’ve read a couple of your books and LOVE THEM!
ย
I’m buying a small house in Missouri that has the dastardly, ever present, St. Augustine grass lawn. I grew up with St. Augustine on TX Gulf Coast, andย before I do anything to try to clear it, I wanted to ask you how you’d handle getting rid of it.ย  I want to make the entire back yard a veggie and fruit tree garden.ย  Would it do well to turn the entire lawn over/under?ย  It’s a pretty hardy grass, so I don’t want it to come back on me.ย  Thought about turning it before winter set in, and hoping it would all freeze with snow on the ground, but just don’t know; since it comes back every Spring, that doesn’t seemย the right solution.
ย
Any guidance you can give me would be much appreciated. Much thanks!

I have fond memories of St. Augustine grass. It was the main lawn in the 1950s-era subdivision of South Florida where I grew up. My Dad kept the grass in the front yard like a perfect green carpet.
It’s a needy grass but certainly looks nice when tended. Except when mushrooms decide to take over, then it looks ridiculous.

Fortunately, getting rid of St. Augustine grass is a lot easier than getting rid of Bermuda grass.
The main killer of St. Augustine is lack of water. It doesn’t easily re-root and grow like Bermuda grass will, so you have a few options. Let’s look at four ways you can get rid of St Augustine grass without chemicals.

Option #1: Till When it’s Dry

You’re correct that St. Augustine will probably re-root if you till it… unless you till when it’s dry out. If you till and then it rains, the grass will probably recover – but if you till the grass when the weather is dry, you should knock most of it out.

That’s not particularly good for the soil, however, since you’ll lose a lot of good fungi, bacteria and organic matter to the weather and wind when you till – especially when it’s dry.
Here’s another option for getting rid of St. Augustine grass.

Option #2: Roast It With Tarps

Get rid of st. augustine grass with a tarpSome plastic or tarps over the ground during the long hot days of summer will cook the grass beneath pretty quickly, allowing you to later turn under what’s left or mulch and plant right into the frizzled remains of your once-green lawn.
A black tarp like one of these will really cook the grass.
This preserves all the top soil, plus the organic matter in the grass itself.

Option #3: Hack it Out

St. Augustine grass isn’t really that hard to remove compared to some grass. Once you get going, you can carve away big swaths with the right tool.

Something like this would do it:

Pile up the grass and roots someplace where they can dry out – like a concrete slab or on a tarp – and they can later be added to a compost pile.

Option #4: Sheet Mulch

Gather cardboard, layer it down, then pile at least a foot of mulch, leaves, straw or other organic matter on top of it. The grass beneath will suffocate and then be turned into rich compost by the worms.

One of my friends piled up mulch and then planted corn right into it. Amazingly, it worked!

Goodbye, St. Augustine grass – hello deep fertility (and corn on the cob!).

Finally…

As grass goes, St. Augustine really isn’t the worst. It’s better than having bare soil, so make sure that wherever you get rid of St. Augustine grass you have something to replace it, whether gardens, trees, wildflowers or mulch. The soil degrades rapidly when uncovered, so keep it covered.

You might consider just taking out the grass in sections over time, leaving it where you’re not actively working just as a cover for the ground.

Good luck and may you never need to mow again.
