Building a Simple Composting Toilet

I build another “lovable loo,” the composting toilet design from Joseph Jenkin’s book The Humanure Handbook:

This is the same system I discuss in Compost Everything: The Good Guide to Extreme Composting. I have used it in two different locations, both in Tennessee and Florida, and it works excellently. There is more materials handling than some will be comfortable with, but it’s a big savings over a standard septic system.

With a composting toilet you can avoid installing an expensive septic system, plus you get tons of compost for your fruit trees. Win-win.

Later I hope to install one of Sandy Graves’ BoonJon toilets. They are easier to use than the lovable loo.

The image at the top of this post is the first lovable loo I built back in Tennessee. I didn’t think to film it, so my new video rectifies that situation.
