Ken Tichy shares a comment on his easy way to make biochar:
I spent $10 on my biochar maker. Paid $10 for a 55 gal steel drum with a lid on Facebook Marketplace. Start a fire inside of it with medium thickness branches, or scrap wood (2 inches wide or so), once it’s burning really hot just put the metal lid on top while leaving a small crack for the smoke to escape. Make no holes anywhere on the drum, as the idea is to let no oxygen there and have no air flow, except letting smoke out through the top, which you can regulate so no air gets in. Let it pyrolyze, much like they used to make charcoal in the olden days by making a huge pile of wood and covering it with clay before setting it on fire. When smoke dies down significantly, close it to snuff the process. Drum is cold, charcoal is ready. No waste whatsoever and no ash. Just break it down into small pieces.
Sounds like a plan!

How do you regulate it?
