Yesterday I made the mistake of looking up various bamboo trellis designs earlier today, then found myself out at the edge of the yard with a sawsall, cutting canes to drag back to the garden.
I’m thinking of building something like this:
Unfortunately, that website now does not exist, though I found the text describing the trellis build via the Internet Wayback Machine. The rest of the photos are gone, however.
We’ve made some bamboo trellises before – they are not only useful, they are beautiful.
Well, I mean, they CAN be beautiful. That one above is probably the ugliest one I ever made, but I was in a hurry.
Anyhow – once I got a bunch of bamboo cut and dragged to the garden yesterday afternoon, I got distracted by a friend’s visit and ended up planting some peaches and cassava and doing some weeding instead.
Maybe I’ll work on it this evening. It’s pouring right now.

Funny. I just got a hand full of poles from my neighbors stand. Im doing an arbor over the fence gate so my passion fruit vine can continue to the other side of the fence. Anyway….not sure if this is a no-no to mention another you tubers channel (guess u will decide if this gets published :-) ), but Homesteadin’ Hawaii has some good videos on bamboo construction. Especially on preserving the bamboo and connection techniques like pegging and lashing.
I’m going more Japanese gateway style…but ultimately just winging the design. Make sure u post the end results.
Dude, you can mention any YouTuber you like. I don’t care at all.
I would love to see what you make, too.
Bamboo is an amazing plant and so many uses. I look forward to seeing your bamboo structures. I’ve been looking for a good book or website for building with bamboo, do you have any suggestions?
I have a book on building with bamboo… somewhere. I need to find it and look through it.
I bought a house a year ago and spent $500 on a guy to dig up the bamboo plants along my fence line so I could replace the fence. He had to dig down to the hard pan to remove the rhizomes. When people mention bamboo I get a little anxiety lol. That said, I may use this idea-prop up some bamboo stakes against my house with some chicken wire for my cucamelons to climb.
I really need to plant some bamboo or find some I can harvest without getting shot at. I can get switch cane fairly easily with a bit of driving and have been thinking about how I could use it in the garden. Should be fairly easy to weave.
