The risk, of course, is that we’ll get a harsh overnight low in the next month or two that will burn off all the blooms and new growth, eliminating the year’s harvest of fruit.
I really hope that doesn’t happen. This is a tricky time. I can cover some of my smaller trees to protect them but the larger trees are now on their own.
Three of my peaches are blooming:
It’s hard to find more beautiful trees in the spring than peaches. The nectarine out front is also blooming but since it’s a tiny tree I don’t really want it fruiting yet so if any nectarines start to develop I’ll pinch them off. It needs to get good and tall before having babies.
My Anna apples are in bloom right now and the black cherry is also about to pop. Fortunately, my Japanese persimmons, pears, cherries, plums and other apples are still sound asleep.
I hope they stay that way for another month at least. Or that we get lucky and don’t see a cold snap that goes much below freezing.
I want fruit!

My peach is blooming too. Unfortunately, it's supposed to get in the 20's before the week is out. I am praying. That's all I can do. I can't cover it.
Put on your sprinkler all night beneath the tree. If the tree ices over, keep running it until the ice melts again. It will save the fruit/blooms.
What is the species of apple that you are growing? I live in south Louisiana and didn't think there were any apple trees that would produce fruit this far south.
Anna, Golden Dorsett and Ein Shemer all produce well. Also, Granny Smith and King David are worth trying. Also, check out Kuffell Creek Nursery for very interesting details on apples in hot climates.
Nice..my Dorsett is blooming and my Tropic sweet has a bunch of new growth..we're about to have another cold snap here in Jacksonville, so we'll see how they do..A bunch of my blueberry bushes are budding and a few even have new growth..thought that was kind of strange..
My peach tree is doing this . small peaches are on it right now, its mid january and been pretty warm. Should I let it do its thing or pinch them off? The tree is less then a year old. Thanks for any info
At that age I’d just remove all the fruit – they’ll interfere greatly with root development and tree growth, as it takes a ton of energy to make fruit, especially for a young tree. Wait another year or so. Mulch well, keep it fed and watered and a peach will grow quite fast.
