I’ve been watching the “Living Soil Film” on YouTube in bits and pieces over the last day and am enjoying it:
At one point a farmer shares the optimum temperature for microbial activity – 75 degrees – then shares how hot bare soil gets without mulch and how that stops good things from happening. I hadn’t thought about the micro-life in the soil when considering mulch, just the tree roots. I knew it was better for tree roots not to get baked, but now I’ll be thinking about the soil life as well. A good reminder.
Also – women shaving their heads is not a good look.

I shaved my head once. It was kind of cute IMO. But I didn’t like it enough to make up for random strangers calling me “sir”. It was either grow the hair back out, or start wearing frilly dresses… and frilly dresses aren’t practical in the garden ;)
Thanks for the link to the film. That is right up my alley! Maybe it’ll console me for the loss of my last three years’ soil-building work– we live on a lake, and in the last three months the water has come up and swallowed my entire garden. Alas. I will have to move my efforts uphill.
DtG, do a quick search of “Gabe Brown soil” and you’ll be inundated with a wealth of knowledge on soil health. He’s a large scale farmer that has doing it naturally (not chemically) for years at a profit!
Great knowledge source.
Loved the movie. I need to figure out which cover crops work best in my area.
