One of my cigar box birdhouses managed to attract about the most useful local bird species to my yard:
The blurry photo (thanks, telephoto lens) isn’t the best, but you can see the female on the bottom has a bit of nest-building material in her beak.
Apparently, 2/3 of a bluebird’s diet consists of insects. They also hatch multiple broods per year.
I wasn’t sure if the size of this box would attract them… I’m very pleasantly surprised that I managed to make a bluebird nest. This is, of course, part of my new “make more habitat” plan for the food forest.
I need to hang more boxes!

Great use of a cigar box. Having such creatures are a great boon for your food forest, too. Of course, I'm sure you already knew that!

The unknown bird is a Carolina Wren.They eat lots of bugs and will nest in just about anything near your house-Shoes included!
Great to see that the bluebirds are building a nest. It would be really beneficial if you make your boxes with swing out doors so you can clean out the nest material after the babies fledge. With a little assistance you can get quite a few batches of babies from a single pair of Bluebirds.

Watch em close and make sure the wrens don't chase em out. Nothing can keep a garden insect free as well as a pair of nesting Bluebirds.
