Anyone have an idea what this thing is?
I started a thread at Permies.com but no one has posted a reply. Anyone out there have an idea?
I found it growing while on a walk to this little beach area near my house:
I just posted the picture because it’s beautiful, not because there’s any relation to my plant ID question.
On the ridge about 100′ up from that little bay I found my mystery plant. The leaves really remind me of a pawpaw. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any seeds in the fruit or on the ground. All of them must have been stripped out – along with most of the pulp – by rats or fruit bats.
It’s a nice big fruit, though. If I can’t get an ID here or on Permies, I’m going to call a local scientist I know and see if he has any leads for me.

I was wondering if you had any of your soap berry trees still? I would love to buy one from you and am also looking for ideas to plant in my front yard that has me with in west palm beach code but do not want to plant grass. I want something that has a purpose. I thought I had more time to get this done but my neighbor who doesnt like trees or plants has called me in to the code enforcement office. So this is something that I need to get planted in the next few weeks.
thanks you for any advice.
sincerely, Erica
Hi Erica,
I don’t have any now – I moved to Central America. I would try looking up local Permaculture groups on Meetup.com and ask people if anyone knows where you can get Sapindus saponaria.
