My friend Mart shared this with me recently – it’s called the Kratky hydroponic method:
My problem with hydroponic gardening has always been the extensive infrastructure required. This eliminates a lot of that.
Notice that the roots are actually getting oxygen right from the air, rather than from oxygenated water. Wild.
Off-grid hydroponics like the Kratky method make more sense to me than some of the intensive systems I’ve seen, particularly those involving fish and miles of PVC piping.
It will be interesting to see if this method gains more mainstream press.

I had 4 lower-tech hydroponic beds and I grew lots of lettuce & basil. My friend, Louie, had a indoor plant nursery. He started with this same Kratky method with basil and once he made enough money on the lower tech Kratky system, he upgraded his system with lots of pipes, timers, etc. He was a very successful hydroponic farmer & he always kept a greenhouse with the Kratky system. I had too much lettuce for my family!
