Deborah Cho shared this recent interview on dry farming with Steve Solomon and the Dry Farming Collaborative:
Steve’s new book Water-Wise Gardening expands on his original excellent work in Gardening Without Irrigation.
Steve’s insight nukes the intensive gardening methods we’ve learned in recent decades – it’s truly eye-opening to read and hear him.
Amy Garrett has a good introduction to dry farming here – along with some good photos.

It all sounds very interesting and I only with that we here in Phoenix AZ (annual 7-10″ of rain) could do it too!
It would be hard to go without any irrigation, but Steve’s book covers the best use of limited water, so the concepts will still help.
He talked a lot about needing good soil depth to hold the water. Mine is fairly thick clay, so I assume that means adding whatever organic/char/etc matter I can to it to a good depth, but how else do you get good “deep” soil?
I ordered his new book (thanks for publishing it!) so maybe he answers how to make that happen.
So very, very interesting, Mr. Good, thank you.
We have ZOnes it’s difficult to get water to. I’m going to be thinking about this a lot before the growing season.
