Pears and hot peppers! Sometimes even together:
It’s really nice having cooler days. It’s making gardening fun again. And the pears! They are wonderful. We’ve preserved 8 5-gallon buckets of them so far. The peppers are overflowing as well, and look like they’ll just keep rolling until winter.

Hi there, I enjoyed your book Grow or Die and enjoy watching your videos. Question about fava beans–quoting from Nourishing Traditions “Fava beans contain a substance, which is not neutralized by soaking, sprouting or fermenting, that can cause a type of life-threatening anemia in persons with an inherited susceptibility and therefore best avoided.” Have you heard anything about this, any thoughts? My husband has fava beans coming up right now!
Yes, I have heard about it. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you come from the Mediterranean. It is a rare genetic condition. Some people also die from allergies to peanuts, wasp stings, etc. It’s a small risk.
