55lbs of goat, fresh from the farmer.
He was still butchering when I arrived to pick it up. Grass-fed, locally produced, no GMO feed, no hormones… just nice, good goat. The farmer is a friend of mine (same guy who I wrote the “sheep in my corn” song about) and he called me last night to ask if I wanted to buy the whole goat.
I’ve put a few pounds in the crockpot with onions, black pepper and lots of curry. The rest went to the freezer. We’ll be eating good for a while.
When we first moved here it was hard to figure out where people buy their food. In town there’s a lot of expensive imported meat, including Tyson chicken, Nathan’s hot dogs, etc. There’s also a meat market, but that’s a bit of a drive from us and I don’t like to go that often. Now, though, I know more of the farmers and I can get most of what we need within a few miles of home. It’s one of those things you learn as you make relationships and get to know people. After two years, I’m starting to get it.

My brother had a few goats a few years back. butchered one and I got some of the meat. There is nothing better than fresh ANYTHING. Produce, fish, meat, eggs….it’s all so much better than anything you can buy at the store.
I’ve been making every attempt possible to actually include home grown stuff in every meal at home. I’m just starting out, but I have learned a lot. Not only is it better for you, but it also gives a sense of value to the food we eat. Discarding food that you actually labor over is a lot more painful than throwing out some limp greens from the store.
Goat is good! I grind most, do an occasional roast, and pressure cook all left over bones into stock an broth. Yum! Im cooking up a couple goat burgers for lunch… I mixed it 2/3 goat to 1/3 pork… Can’t be beat!
That sounds fantastic. We have a hand-driven meat grinder and the sinews and gristle always bind it up. I think we need a professional model.
I bought a simple electric grinder about $80 usd and it doesn’t have an issue with sinue. A #8 model i think. (Chard brand) I had same issue with hand grinder. Even with young goats. Now I process my older retired milkers into tasty nourishment without much fuss.
I need to get one!
