    David – have you ever grown yams near papayas? Papayas have shallow root systems and I wonder if digging yams would disturb the papaya “trees”? How close/far away should yams and papayas be spaced? Also -similar questions for sweet potatoes instead of yams. Thanks for any feedback.

    Hi DTG! I have been reading your book “Grow or Die”, love it, and have already bought it for my friend who is trying to make a living as a farmer, with a plow horse and such. She is much younger than I am, strong and capable, with about 8 feet of delicious soil on her property. I, not young, live so close to her that I can her the small river than runs by her house…and I have red clay soil. Sigh. However, your book has given me hope that I can be a better gardener, rather than the place that beautiful young plants arrive at, only to die. I really want to survive TEOTWAWKI, and have been working on that for some time. One of the things I want to grow are yams, those nice D. alata that you wrote about. And here you are, on Jan. 17, writing about them again! My question, is were can a nice human being (me) who lives in Oregon get my hands on some of these? I have plans DTG, big plans. Any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer to not drive to Florida to get some that I have to smuggle home in my suitcase. TIA

      I would try Etsy – there are often sellers on there. In your area, you might look for D. polystachya as well; however, it can be invasive.

    thank you for your response to my question! I actually used the link that another commenter left, and ordered a few little fellers on Ebay. There were a lot of the purple yams, but I wanted to start with the white ones. When it comes to eating or growing, do you have a preference? I will probably order some purple ones too. (Unless you say don’t!) Thank you for all your super interesting articles about all things to grow! PS….you eat okra, but not z——-? The delights of z—— are beyond compare! :o)

      The purple yams are preferred by Filipinos, but do not grow nearly as vigorously. We grow more of the white ones.

    Thank you DTG! Also, when I mentioned that my young friend has “8 feet of delicious soil”, I meant 8 feet deep, lol! However, I do have much better sun time on my ground than she does…..I guess it’s hard to have everything! I have already ordered and given her your book “Grow or Die”….and maybe she doesn’t need that horse for plowing….I will make sure she knows about your website too! Have a wonderful weekend!
