There are some good tips here:
He missed my favorite method, though: build your compost pile where you plan to plant the next season.
I like the comfrey idea he shared.
It made me wonder if I could do the same thing with canna lilies here, as comfrey doesn’t seem to like the heat. Cut and come again.

I’m the same David! I have green eyes of envy, for anyone who can grow comfrey where they live. As it seems to turn up it’s nose here, every time I try it. But I DO use canna lilies, as they thrive in our hot conditions. You can use the standard flowering variety, or the arrowroot variety. It doesn’t “flower”, but you can make gluten free “flour” ;) from the roots.
I have been growing comfrey in a pot in the shade here in central Florida, i think i will try it next to my compost bin as soon as the rain stops. It has been a beautiful soaking rain that we have desperately needed for a while now. I have a compost bin under a trellis i grow yams, yard long beans, and velvet beans so it will be pretty well shaded, and the plants get plenty of water and compost tea. I hope to break the rules on comfrey and figure out how to grow it in the heat. So far potted in the shade with lots of water has been working.
We just got a good soak ourselves yesterday at long last. I’ll bet it does okay so long as it never dries out. Plants seem to like you.
