Those are nuts from a California Bay Laurel.
Steven from the excellent Turkeysong Blog sent me these, along with two varieties of rare onions, along with some seeds and scion wood from some of his apple research.
So – what can you do with California Bay Laurel? Steven writes about the tree here.
I’m excited to see how they’ll grow here in Florida. Like myself, Steven is an INTJ personality type with crazy research skills… I highly recommend subscribing to his blog. Though we disagree on religious issues, we’re definitely in the same boat when it comes to plants and low-tech solutions to living.
As for the scions, I’ll take photos when I graft them and make sure to record their progress here.

Thanks for the kind words amigo. I'm not sure if those nuts are viable. I've always assumed that, like acorns, once dried they won't sprout. Worth a try though. I can send fresh ones sometime in the fall if they won't grow. I just stuffed as many in the box as there was extra space. I sell them on ebay too. They are inedible raw. Best way to roast that I've found so far is in a stove top popcorn popper, but the oven works well enough if you are on top of stirring them every 3 minutes at about 425 to 450 degrees.
