On Sunday, one of our piglets had some sort of seizure, then died. Not sure what happened, but she was not a particularly good specimen.
So what do you do when an animal dies?
Bury it in the garden and plant over it, of course!
I dug a hole in the herb garden and buried the pig, then planted a small Rachel mulberry tree next to it. We won’t get bacon, but we’ll get mulberries.
There is a cycle of life on the homestead. Extra vegetables and whey and root peelings and other waste go to the pigs and chickens. When they are butchered, the waste goes into the compost or into a pit, which we then cover over with soil and plant over.
Most organic “waste” is easy to recycle into something useful.

Pushing the zone, can I get coffee in zone 8a if I create a microclimate?
Coffee can’t take frost. I was able to get it to fruit in 8b by planting a tree in a big pot and hauling it inside during cold weather.
How much protection can a well designed microclimate provide when pushing the zone?
I have a large clay pit with sandy bottom. Steep 20 foot clay walls on the south, west and east sides.
North side sloppy face south has full sun for approximately 5000 sq feet of growth space. Approximately another 5000 sg ft of full sun growth space in the flat sandy bottom.
I am thinking of using a liner to create a 2000 sq ft pond in bottom hoping it with the right plants will create a humidity thermal mass, canopy blanket wind brake.
I’m not sure. Probably quite a bit.
A few beloved dogs are still giving peaches and mulberries to this day… And I think of them often when picking/tending the trees.
