One of the benefits of having a creek running behind the house: free fish!
Since we made some cane poles last week, the children and I have been catching fish and having more fun in the creek.
There’s a little dam that’s about a block down the road from our house and on the downward side of it is a deeper area where fish hang out.
We went down there a little before dark and caught fish until the sun was gone and bats were flitting in between us.
I don’t know what type of fish these are but they taste good. Nice white flaky flesh. I fry them in butter, of course. Rachel has been teaching the children how to gut and scale them so I’m hoping soon we’ll be able to just let the kids catch all our food while Rachel and I sip rum cocktails and reminiscence about those crazy old days when we used to have to go grocery shopping…
Last week I also tried taking the cane poles to the beach, which didn’t work at all.
I had fun, anyhow, and the children built an epic sand castle.
We found another spot with an old dock where I’d like to try fishing since it’s a lot calmer than the beach above.
I need to get good at this. Gardening is good but I need meat. Lots and lots of meat!
