Progress!

I’m working on some of the fun parts of homebuilding right now: floors and tiles!

Here’s the floor I am working on for the outhouse:

I varnished it over and made it darker after this shot, but I’m not entirely happy with the muted effect so I may re-spray the pattern to brighten it up again.

In the laundry room, I am also working on tiling the work shelf and the area where the washer and dryer are going to sit:

I got a bunch of broken tiles for free and am putting them to good use. I started the pattern above, then my daughter and one of my sons worked on it until it was completed. Today I need to mortar the cracks – which is one of my favorite jobs – and then we’ll have a nice, sturdy space.

A bigger problem is the floor, which is quite uneven. I am hoping to find a leveling compound I can use to make it better for tiling. If I tile it as-is, it will be a wavy mess.

The sun is shining today, so I am back to work. Rachel is joining me so she can make curtains for the cabin as I work on the tile. I’ve skipped doing the Goodstream for the last couple of days because I have a chest cold; however, I feel fine otherwise and am quite enjoying the work on our homestead.

If you want to watch the entire build, bit by bit, check out my Tiny House Expat Living series on Unauthorized.TV, where it’s available for Good Gardening subscribers at an affordable $5 per month.
